  CAN AIDS BE CURED ?
There is no cure for AIDS. The best cure is prevention!

Antiretroviral therapy

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can slow down replication of the HIV virus in the body. Antiretroviral drugs can also slow down the damage to the body's immune system. But there is no therapy available today that is able to eliminate the HIV virus from the body. This is why it is important to develop AIDS vaccines.

HIV drug research has been very successful in developing stronger and more targeted drugs to control viral replication, minimize damage to the immune system, and prevent or treat most opportunistic infections. Treatment with these drugs has led to a significant improvement in expectation and quality of life of AIDS patients.

However, this treatment does not eliminate the virus, and some of the lingering opportunistic infections are very difficult to treat. In addition, new antiretroviral drug therapy can only be accessed today by a fraction of the tens of millions of infected people. The majority of individuals with access to these treatments live in the developed world.

Because of all of these reasons, it is important to potentiate HIV prevention campaigns to avoid risky behaviours, and to develop an effective HIV vaccine.
